Last month (and the month before that, and that!), I shared the three podcasts in my subscription box I just cannot resist. These are the shows I tune in to the second I see a new upload, no matter where I am. This short list rotates often for me, and today I've got three new ones: Alice Isn't Dead, Pardon My French, and The Secret Room.
1. Alice Isn't Dead. Have you been listening to this new fictional thriller? If not, stop everything and pop in some earbuds, because you're in for a serious treat. It's the brand new show from the Night Vale Presents network, and its first two episodes have me totally hooked. The first one sets the mood perfectly -- a truck driver travels cross-country, coasting down empty highways and stopping at small-town gas stations and dingy diners along the way. It's so dark and eerie. In the second episode, the plot begins to unfold. The driver is on the hunt for her wife Alice, who disappeared long ago without a trace. She assumed she was dead, until she spotted her in the background of a Midwestern news broadcast for a gruesome murder. The show is unbelievably creepy and really beautifully made. I'm very anxiously awaiting the third episode (only thirteen days!).
2. Pardon My French. Garance Doré's new podcast Pardon My French is only three episodes in, but so far, it's really good. In each one, Garance (the fashion blogger, New York Times best-selling author, and CFDA award-winning journalist) sits down to chat for an hour with special guests like actress Zosia Mamet, creative duo Emily Mortimer and Dolly Wells, or talented sisters Erin and Sara Foster. Their conversations are refreshingly relaxed, and I love that you can hear bustling New York City cafes in the background. It's like you're literally grabbing a cup of coffee with (very famous and incredibly talented) friends. If you haven't heard anything from this new podcast yet, I'd definitely recommend starting with episode one, Friendship. Dolly Wells and Emily Mortimer chat about their lifelong relationship as friends, the making of their hit HBO show, and how they've become such a powerful creative team. A new episode from the show drops tomorrow (and every Thursday), and I'm absurdly excited for it.
3. The Secret Room Podcast. The Secret Room is another fantastic new podcast. Hosts Dahlia Beta and Ben Hamm talk to anonymous storytellers who share the kind of secrets they haven't even told their parents, their spouses, or their best friends. One woman spoke about how she got revenge on ex via the internet, another revealed the way she got back at a celebrity who tormented her daily on a remote movie set, and someone else told the story from her teens of the time she took a week-long trip to meet a group she found on the internet. The past two episodes -- Secret Marriage/Epic Trip and BeeGees/Breakmaster Cylinder -- have been particularly great. Quinn talks about the spontaneous six-week marriage from her early twenties that she deeply regrets, and Dahlia's dad tells a story about the time he sold pot to the Bee Gees in Tokyo. Most of the secrets revealed so far have been pretty innocent, but some of them (if heard by the right person) could truly turn lives upside down. Being let in on those intimate secrets is oddly thrilling, and I'm loving The Secret Room for that. I have no idea what will be revealed in episode six next week, but I can't wait to hear it.
So tell me, what are the podcasts in your subscription box you simply can't resist? Any of these? I'd love to hear!
