Happy Monday to you! Here's what I've been thinking about lately...
1. The history of the podcast. Did you see this great piece on the history of podcasting last week from Brian Roff? The graphic timeline that's included is fascinating. It includes some details about the industry that I hadn't heard before, like when the very first podcast was created, who coined the term "podcast" in the first place, and which show made the big bucks via Kickstarter back in 2012. I was also excited to learn that we podcast addicts are in good company -- one in five listeners tunes in to six or more shows per week. Go check it out if you haven't already. It's a good one.
2. Panoply turned one! Did you hear that Panoply -- Slate Magazine's podcast network -- turned one last week? I had no idea until I came across this tweet from Andy Bowers, Panoply's Chief Content Officer. It reads: "1 year ago today, we launched Panoply with 5 people. Now I work w/ more than 30 of the best talents in podcasting. Happy anniversary to you all!" My mind exploded when I read it -- I had no idea the company was so young. Some of my favorite weekly listens belong to the Panoply network, including She Does, Girlboss Radio, DoubleX Gabfest, and Quiet, Susan Cain's brand new show. With these big-name podcasts, I just assumed the network had been around for years, but I'm so glad I was wrong. Panoply's young success speaks volumes about the strength of the podcasting industry. I can't wait to see where it (and all of the other podcast networks out there!) will be one year from now.
3. Gimlet's Mix Week. You've probably heard about Gimlet's Mix Week by now. But did you happen to see this great article that Gimlet's founders Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber wrote a few days ago about how it went? It's definitely worth a read. They wrote a bit about the Mix Week process -- each podcast team was jumbled up and the five new groups had to create twenty-minute pilots in under thirty hours. They wrote, "One team made a children's show. Another team made a travel podcast. There was a reality show, something else with food..." They weren't planning to release any of the products of Mix Week, but they revealed in the article that one of the pilots is available for Gimlet members to hear. It's a game show called The Hunt, and it sounds really fun. Check it out here if you'd like, and if you haven't yet, be sure to give the article a read.
4. The best thing I heard all day. Starting later today, I'll be trying a little something new here on this site. I'll be uploading a very brief post -- just a few sentences -- about the best podcast episode I heard all day. I plan on doing the same thing tomorrow and the next day and hopefully every other day, as well. So check back later -- probably around 6 or 7pm -- if you're interested. And feel free to share the best thing you heard all day, too. I'm always looking for podcast recommendations and would absolutely love to hear what episodes you're loving.
